Jackson ranching families like the Meads are beginning to use new satellite-integrated cattle collars from the company Halter to manage herds without physical barriers. This technology allows ranchers to set precise boundaries via a mobile app and track livestock in remote areas where cell service is unavailable, which is particularly useful for the rugged terrain in the Gros Ventre foothills. Beyond reducing labor and maintenance costs for local operations, these virtual fences help protect restored springs and allow for easier wildlife migration by reducing the need for traditional barbed wire.
